How to Convert Celsius to Kelvin
Most countries nowadays use the Celsius temperature scale when referring to different degrees of temperature. It is used in weather forecasting, cooking, and even by doctors and nurses when referring to body temperatures. However, those who are engaged in scientific fields and in engineering will also become familiar with a unit of measure called Kelvin. At times, one may find the need to convert from Celsius to Kelvin.
Differentiating the Two Temperature Scales
One of the first things we all need to establish between these two units of measuring temperatures is the fact that both are quite similar. The big difference between Kelvin and Celsius is that Kelvin is based on absolute zero while Celsius is based on the water freezing point. You should expect the temperatures that Kelvin describes is far below the freezing point denoted by Celsius.
Converting from Celsius to Kelvin
Given the fact that both these two units of temperature measurement are virtually similar, you will only have to account for the difference between these two units. Thus, the formula to convert Celsius to Kelvin will be as follows:
K = C + 273.15
The symbol “K” refers to Kelvin while the symbol for Celsius is “C”. You might be wondering where the value 273.15 is taken from. This number is derived from absolute zero, which is the base for Kelvin as stated earlier. This simply means that absolute zero is 273.15 degrees below the freezing point depicted by Celsius.
Sample Calculation
As a bit of an example, let’s say you want to convert 32 degrees Celsius into Kelvin. Following the formula given above, all you have to do is to add 273.15 to 32 degrees Celsius. The result will be 305.15 Kelvin, which is pretty simple. Turning things around, converting from Kelvin to Celsius will be just as easy. All you have to do is to deduct the said base for Kelvin in order to arrive at your Celsius degrees.
Application of the Two Systems of Measurement
Applications in both engineering and science will usually have both Kelvin and Celsius used simultaneously. Though of course you should also expect to find conversions from Celsius to Kelvin as you go over different articles in these said two fields of study. In the scientific world, using both Celsius and Kelvin at the same time is pretty much widespread.
You can consider using both or either of these two units of measurement. Both of these may be used to express temperatures or temperature intervals. The only thing one needs to put in mind is that there will be nothing colder than 0 Kelvin.
