Fahrenheit to Celsius

When you travel from a country or territory that uses Fahrenheit degrees to measure the temperature to a country where Celsius degrees are used instead you will most likely have to convert from one temperature scale to the other. Converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius may become a necessity not just for figuring what was mentioned in the weather report but also in other things like cooking among other things.

Brush Up with the Basics

Here’s a little brushing up with the basics as you learn more about converting from one temperature scale to the other. The Fahrenheit temperature scale was named after Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, a German physicist. This temperature scale has since been replaced in favor of the Celsius temperature scale. Only a few countries in the world persist in its usage such as the United States, Canada, and Belize.

The Celsius degrees on the other hand take its moniker from Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer. Almost all countries in the world use this temperature scale for almost anything. In the US, this scale is mainly used in the field of science. Both Canada and USA still prefer to use Fahrenheit degrees when describing cooking temperature, just check out Canadian or American recipes for proof.

Doing the Math

If you want to invest a few bits of your brain cells into Fahrenheit to Celsius conversion then you are very welcome to do the math. The first step is to take away 32 from the Fahrenheit degrees you intend to convert. Next, you then divide what’s left by nine. After which you multiply the number you got by five, and there’s your Celsius degrees.

As a bit of an example, let’s say you want to convert 80 degrees Fahrenheit. You 80 take away 32 equals 48. 48 divided by nine is 5.33. Multiply 5.33 by five is 26.667 degrees Celsius. Now if you don’t have a calculator with you or you prefer not to bother doing all that on paper then you can go online and search for temperature converters.

If you don’t even want to bother searching for online temperature converters then you can just use Google’s search engine. Enter the number you want to convert then type up ‘Fahrenheit to Celsius’ and then hit enter. As in our previous example, open up Google’s page and type ‘80 Fahrenheit to Celsius’ then hit Enter. On the next page you’ll have the converted values on the screen.

Why Convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius?

There are a number of reasons why you should at least have a general idea how to do all these conversions. For instance, if you’re in a hotel that has the air-conditioner in Celsius, in order for you set it to a comfortable 77 or 78 degrees Fahrenheit, you need to convert it to the right number of degrees Celsius, which is 25 to 26 degrees.

In pretty much the same way, you need to know what 69 degrees Fahrenheit is in Celsius in order to set the thermostat to an ideal temperature in case it doesn’t use Fahrenheit, the converted temperature is 20 degrees Celsius.

People will generally need to learn how to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius when they travel or whenever there’s a need to switch from one temperature scale to the other. You may not always need it but at least you know where to find your tools when such a need arises.
